Art Deco Christmas Celebrations

The United States of America was reaching new heights in industrial power in the early  years of the 21st century and the Art-Deco style was only  a celebration  of that heritage.  However the Art-Deco style which originated in Paris, came into existence and continued to be in practise till the end of World War II. The style which is characterised by glamour, elegance and modernity was reflected in arts, painting, architecture, industrial design and visual arts.

The art deco Christmas decorations were unique in itself. Since the Christmas tree is an integral part of the festival, the tree which is double-sided had a spiral wire base, decorated with silver glitter. It also had a faceted plastic crystal centre. Since the designs of the Art-deco style was characterised by specific lines, any Christmas decoration would be closest to it as far as possible.

The Art-Deco style which became immensely popular in the United States of America and Europe reflected its influence on the Christmas cards which gradually became known amongst the people of these countries. The Christmas cards of the 20th century did not contain any religious symbols. Art deco Christmas cards had beautiful images which were taken directly from the portfolio of greeting cards. Each colour is printed separately from carved linoleum tiles which are put on wooden platforms. Each colour is aligned perfectly to create the final print. It was an updated look, based on classical forms. It was a style both traditional and innovative. The themes of the Christmas cards showcased different aspects of society and aimed at a rich international clientele.

The Christmas cards with the Art Deco influence did not have any patterns, birds, plants etc. Since it was the industrial era, the designs were of cubes and photo type for machine production. The designs were simple straight lines, zigzag lines, pyramidal stepped shapes, symmetrical shapes etc. All these shapes were used and they gave a balanced and even look to the entire picture on the Christmas cards.

The Art Deco style is followed in many parts of the world even today, esp during the Christmas celebration. Resorts and places of social gatherings are decorated in this old-fashioned style on the occasion of Christmas.
