Baking Cakes for Kids

A sponge cake recipe is easy to find, learn and master. You would need to know the common techniques well enough so the cake is as smooth and springs back as sponge.

The common ingredients required for sponge cake:

  • Flour
  • Eggs
  • Water
  • Sugar
  • Baking powder
  • Vanilla essence

The process:

  • Mix flour and baking powder in a bowl and keep aside
  • Separate egg yolk from egg white and beat egg yolk well
  • Add sugar to this; beating well and constantly till egg yolk is thick and almost white
  • Add vanilla essence and water beating a little gently ensuring the mix blends well
  • Mix the flour and the beaten egg-sugar in a cut and fold method blending the two well
  • Beat egg white separately till foam appears. Add rest of the sugar.
  • Mix this with the other flour batter made earlier gently.
  • Pour in the baking mould and bake for about half an hour at 350 degrees F.
  • It should spring back if pressed gently. This would mean the cake is ready.
  • Empty the cake in a serving dish and cool well before serving.

Once the sponge cake is ready you may now try hands on cake icing. It is equally interesting and very creative.

For the icing to come out well you could always practice on pen and paper if it’s your first time. Or better still you could join professional classes held for this. No time for classes? Check out the enormous books available on cake icing and decoration. If nothing works, you could always hit the Google. You would come across videos as well that show and explain in steps how to go about the whole thing.

If it’s for kids, cake recipes are ample to choose from. Also it is always great to involve kids in the process. Their enthusiasm and energy level seemingly spurs the whole idea and the cake somehow seems to be better than ever!
