Christmas gifts and presents are an integral part of the Christmas celebrations. The history of giving gifts on Christmas dates back to the 4th century AD- the time of Saint Nicholas, later called Santa Claus. Saint Nicholas who was the Bishop of Myra, in Asia Minor was known for his generosity and giving gifts to children. So by the 10th century, it was notices that almost every country started participating in the gift giving custom. In the initial days, people exchanged simple gifts, such as fruits, vegetables, toys which were not even wrapped with decorative wrappers. The gifts were often hung on the Christmas tree which eventually became popular with time. Thus the entire idea of Christmas gifts spread far across Europe, the Americas and also in many parts of Africa. However in the 1820’s, the idea of parents giving gifts to their children on the eve of Christmas gained momentum. The commercialization of Christmas began in the 1920’s , i.e. during the period of the Great Depression. Poets and writers took upon themselves the responsibility of encouraging people to Christmas shopping and this was done only to overcome the Depression.
