Christmas Celebrations in Different Latin American Countries
Latin America is a region of America where languages like Portuguese or Spanish are spoken. Latin America stretches from the South of United States to the southernmost tip of South America. People living in this region mainly follow Christianity and this is the reason why Christmas is the biggest festival for them. In most parts of Latin America Christmas is celebrated in a very religious way and that is why the main focus is on the manger. Most families dedicate the entire room to the manger which is beautifully decorated and is fitted with tiny figures as well.
Latin America consists of various countries and each country has a distinct way of celebrating Christmas. In order to understand the Christmas celebration in Latin American countries I have listed some major countries along with their way of celebrating Christmas:
Chile
Chile is located at the southwestern corner of the South American continent. The Christmas celebrations in Chile are centered around family and church. Most people follow the tradition of fasting around nine days before Christmas. The Christmas dinner consists of the traditional turkey which is served along with fruits, cake and cookies.
Argentina
Argentina is another Latin American country which celebrates Christmas by visiting the church with their family. Another very important tradition is that most adults dance till midnight while kids are busy in fireworks. The dinner basically consists of pork, turkey and various other dishes as well.
Venezuela
Venezuela is another country which gives a lot of importance to mangers. Most people in Venezuela attend one of the nine carol services as well. When you are in Venezuela at the time of Christmas you would continuously hear the ringing of bells and the bursting of firecrackers. Most families generally attend a mass and then return home where a huge and fancy dinner is waiting for them.
Brazil
Brazil is the biggest Latin American country. Christmas in Brazil is celebrated in quite the same way as it is celebrated in other Latin American countries. Most people like visiting the church and sing Christmas songs. In Brazil Christmas is the time for family get-togethers.
Christmas in Latin America is celebrated more or less in the same way but all countries have some unique traditions. Just like any other country which has a huge Christian population enjoys Christmas to the core people living in Latin America also believe in enjoying Christmas by offering prayers to god and decorating a manger.
