Christmas Through Fine Arts

Christmas and the story of Jesus Christ, especially his birth, has been an inspiration for innumerous pieces of art work. The divine inspiration that seemed to come from the wonderful story of Christ paved the way for many talented artists to create beautiful masterpieces that can be considered to be fine art Christmas.

The Nativity of Jesus has been one of the major subjects of Christian art dating back to the 4th century. The artistic depictions of the birth of Christ which is celebrated during the Christmas season are mainly based on the narratives found in the Holy Bible and in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke.

Majority of Christian art include varied representations of Virgin Mary and Christ Child. In general, such art works are referred to as the “Madonna and Child” and “Virgin and Child”. These are not related to Nativity specifically. They are considered to be devotional depiction of various divine attributes of Virgin Mary or Christ.

Nativity art are those which depicts and illustrates the events related to the Birth of Jesus Christ and their composition include various sequences from the life of Jesus as well as his mother, Virgin Mary. Nativity pictures are the best examples of fine art Christmas since the scenes they show are always related to the birth and life of Jesus.

From the 15th century onwards, the most common depiction in fine art Christmas became the Adoration of the Magi. One reason for this shift in importance maybe due to the fact that the subject lent itself to different and elaborate pictorial details and the freedom and scope to use rich colors. Another was, as the paintings became larger and more elaborate, there was more space that needed to be filled out. As a result, the original Nativity scenes were slowly replaced by the more crowded subject matter of Adoration of Magi.

Throughout the ages, the divine story of Christmas and the birth of the Christ Child is beautifully retold through the various paintings by some of the world’s greatest artists. During the Renaissance art period, there emerged a great many artists with varied styles and using varied elements of arts and they depicted the sacred story of the birth and life of Jesus Christ from the Bible in their own individual styles. The fine art Christmas depicts the Nativity and everything related to the Birth of Jesus Christ and every artist of renown has contributed their own interpretation of the timeless, ageless and inspiring story.
