Colorful Christmas in Costa Rica

Just like many other countries all across the world Costa Rica has its own way to celebrate the holy festival of Christmas. Costa Rica is a Central American which is quite near to the equator which means that the climate is tropical all around the year. It is not hot at the time of Christmas but the climate is quite enjoyable as there is a slight chill in the air. Just like most other countries Christmas is a time of lights, music and family togetherness. But there are some Christmas traditions that are exclusive to the Republic of Costa Rica some of which include:

  • The major attraction at the time Christmas is the festival ‘De LA Luz’ which is held in the capital of the country San Jose. The entire city is decorated with beautiful lights which enhances the overall feel of the festival.
  • Bullfights are another Costa Rican tradition at the time of Christmas.
  • Another unique tradition of the Costa Rican’s is that they decorate cypress trees with lights and ornaments. But some people also use the dried branches of the coffee shrub.
  • Costa Rican’s enjoy elaborate dinners just like people living in other countries but the only difference is that the food is quite different. Tamales are the staple of a traditional Costa Rican Christmas dinner. Other dinner specialties are Tres Leches cake and different types of pastries.
  • People living in Costa Rica follow the traditions of Latin American and that is why it is very important for them to construct a ‘portal’. People in Costa Rica create beautiful portals but the only difference is that they add dolls, farm animals, fruits, tiny toys and lights in it. People living in the country believe that families that don’t have a house should always create a portal in order to be blessed by god which will help them in getting a house of their own.

Costa Rica is one of the most beautiful Central American countries and at the time of Christmas the entire country is beautifully decorated which further beautifies the look of the entire nation.

Like most other nations Christmas is a time of family get together in Costa Rica and this is the best thing about this festival. Another thing which makes Costa Rica special is the type of food that they prepare at the time of Christmas. Costa Rica has its own traditions when it comes to celebrating Christmas and this is what makes them different from other nations.
