Inception of Santa Claus
Santa Claus is a famous old name that has been coming down from many centuries. The legend of Santa Claus goes back to the time of Christ, almost 2,000 years ago.
It is believed that around 280 A.D., a man was born in a town called Patara by the name of Nicolas. You can find the town on a globe or a map to locate the city in country of Turkey.
Nicolas was a very kind hearted man and became a monk for devoting himself to god and religion. Nicolas was also a big admirer of his family and neighbors and devoted himself to them too. His kindness and generosity spread all across his homeland and far. Born into wealth, Nicolas gave all his family’s money to the underprivileged and needy.
Gradually, he became so famous that he was known as the protector of all children and sailors. He even saved some young girls from getting sold into slavery. Their father was selling the daughters to make a fortune, but Nicolas came and rescued the girls by offering money to their father.
No wonder that Santa Claus became Saint Nicolas after his demise. For a long time, Europeans celebrated him on December 6, which is marked as the date of his death. Some even stated that Saint Nicolas was the most admired saint in entire Europe during middle Ages. For this reason, December 6 was always considered to be a lucky day amongst people.
Another historical significance of Santa Claus is known to bring joy and happiness amongst people. He brings gifts to children and listens to their wishes.
There have been many different Stories of Santa Claus in diverse cultures. Some believe that Santa Claus was based on the mythological god, while some believe hat he has his roots in Christianity. In Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, he is believed to be based on the god of wisdom, Odin. In Italy and Austria, he is renowned as a holy man who reforms child-eating monster. In British rendition, Santa Claus was a bearded man who brings joy and happiness all around.
In Dutch, British and early American influences, he came together as the Santa Claus which is familiar with today’s jolly old man. He distributes gifts with the help of reindeer and elves. The myth associated with Santa Claus stems in 1990s when companies like Coca Cola and White Rock Beverages started using Santa’s representation to promote their products. His distinct red & white colors helped in attracting the attention of masses.
Beside all the different beliefs about the history of Santa Claus, he still continues to stay in the hearts of every individual throughout every country as a man of generosity, kindness and goodness of Christmas.
