New Year eve sees some great display of fireworks to greet the coming year with brightness, light and prosperity. But Halloween is a totally different sort of an event.
The theme of Halloween is somewhat scary and eerie: “The night of the dead”. But people instead of scaring, like to celebrate this event with lot of fun and joy. The main origin of Halloween is however unknown.
On the night of Halloween, people generally dress up in costumes that represent scary characters like witches, goblins, demons etc. and go out to attend specially organized parties. These parties features various game shows, quiz contests etc. and end with some food appetites specially cakes, wines, pizzas and most importantly candies of numerous types.
Graveyards are also decorated beautifully with flowers, candles and lights. Families of the deceased goes to offer tribute before the graves of the members that have passed away. Small gifts comprising of cookies, fruits, chocolates and candies as well as other presents are kept before the graves of the deceased members.
The decoration of streets and houses are done with candles, Jack-O-Lanterns, and figures of skeletons and other scary characters. But the event is incomplete without the presence of Halloween bonfires.
Halloween and bonfires have some common resemblance between each other. According to ancient Halloween traditions, bonfires are lightening up to scare the spirits away from the human beings. In the Western countries, you will see various bonfires been organized in several parts of the streets.
Also, in the houses bonfires are arranged in the lawns, gardens or even in the drawing room where the fire place is available. Families usually sit around the bonfires and enjoy chatting and delicacies during this Halloween eve. Various activities are also performed while sitting beside the bonfires.
According to certain cultures, foods are offered to the dead by inserting them into the bonfires. According to their traditional beliefs, the smoke leads the food towards the dead spirit.
It is said that Halloween and bonfires are compatible to each other and whatever may be the reason, the custom and tradition of bonfires are held in almost all those countries that celebrate Halloween.?
