Origin of Religious Christmas Cards

There is no written evidence as to origin or beginning of the religious Christmas cards. But it is known that in the Middle Ages, prints of religious cards were being produced by engravers of wood. These were having religious theme. The first batch of the religious Christmas cards came out in 1843. Sir Henry Cole did something different on Christmas. Instead of sending letters to the family and friends on the occasion of Christmas, he appointed artist, John Callcott Horsley, to create a religious Christmas cards. The caption on these cards read “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year”. Sir Henry Cole then offered around 1000 copies for sale. This became a hit. And there on tradition of sending religious cards on Christmas began. And within 30 years this tradition spread across the world.

How to Make Religious Cards on the Occasion of Christmas on Your Own

Today in market you get lot of religious Christmas cards. But by making a handmade religious card on this occasion, you would be able to express love for Christmas. The cards that you make at home can be simple or complicated while displaying the religious side of Christmas.

  • Collect various Christmas religious pictures that you like. You can also take out print out of the images which you get online. Before cutting any picture or taking printout, you should be aware of the size of the card which you intend to make.
  • Apart from taking print out or cutting picture, you can also draw some picture. Then you can color the same. Further, in order to make different copies of the same, take colored print out of the same.
  • You can also create a collage using various cut out pictures, or stamps featuring traditional Christmas scenes. You can find various images online also.
  • Inside the card you can add personalized message such as prayer or wishes. Try not to use any three dimensional items, as the card cannot lay flat in this case.
  • At the back of the card you can also write in the corner “Handmade By….” along with your name or logo. This will help you in case you intend to sell your cards.
  • You will require envelop. Buy the same from market or make the same at home. You can match the color of envelop with card which you have created.
