Teaching Your Kids the True Value of Christmas

Christmas is a time for joy and forgiveness. But it is also an important time to initiate your child into learning the true meaning of Christmas by teaching about Christmas. This can be difficult for some parents. But here are some easy and effective ways to teach kids about Christmas.

Bedtime Stories

Bedtime stories are great way to begin with. You can take any biblical story book and start with a short and simple story for your kid. Best way to begin would be to start with a story which describes the birth of Jesus. Do not focus only on Santa Claus and his reindeers. Some suggestions are:
Birth of Jesus – The nativity story
Angela and baby Jesus
B is for Bethlehem
Room for a Little One

Christmas Songs

Songs are best way to retain facts. Sing songs together based on Jesus’ birth and His messages and good deed and sacrifices. Some song suggestions are:
Silent night
Joy to the world
The first noel
I saw three ships
It came upon the midnight clear
Hark the Harold angels sings

The Nativity Celebration

Another interesting way to teaching about Christmas to kids is to celebrate The Nativity. You can do this by:
Baking a cake for Jesus Christ and singing Him ‘Happy Birthday’.
Playing a skit based on The Nativity.
Buying your kid a nativity set and asking him/her to enact the biblical story on his/her own.
To go an extra mile, you can tell your kids that doing charity will be a great present for Jesus. This way your kids will learn the spirit of Christmas – sharing the joy.

Keep Santa Claus at a Distance

It is important to reveal to your kids the origin of Santa Claus. You can tell them the stories of St. Nicholas and his deeds. But on the whole, concentrate on Birth of Jesus and stories relating to Jesus rather than emphasizing the ‘Santa Claus’ myth.

Jesus – Lord’s best Gift to Mankind

Teaching about Christmas to your kids begins from home. Hence, maintain an atmosphere of love and affection at home. Prayer of thanks to Jesus will ingrain the love for God more in the kids. Such practical ways of living are any day better than just reading them stories and singing them songs.

Make it a joyous occasion for your kids to learn the Lord’s love and true meaning of Christmas through stories, songs and prayers.
