Yummy Recipes for Cake Icing

Cake icing recipes have possibly redefined the meaning of variety. I had been to the town hall library last Sunday and found some hundred books with at least a thousand different recipes for cake icing. I later wondered if they had left out anything…practically nothing!

Let me share (and revise myself) all the cake icing recipes and points to remember that I have gathered through this venture:

  • Frosting recipes differ according to their taste and function or base of application
  • Icing recipes could either be used for decorating a cake or for covering the cake with a layer all around
  • The temperature in which the cake will be presented is another factor that needs to be kept in mind while choosing a recipe…all recipes may not work during summers!
  • Icing recipes depend a lot on the kind of decoration that ought to be on it. For example, strawberries and roses require a firm consistency
  • Butter cream icing is the best option for kids. It is very sweet in taste and can be used for pipe decoration or icing the cake
  • Chocolate frosting is possibly one of the most popular varieties. It can be used for frosting and piping (High five! It’s my favourite as well!)
  • Fondant is a classic example of cake icing variants. It gives the ultimate look when used for covering a cake. If you have any idea that is a little ‘out of the box’ and indeed dramatic, fondant is your take (clue: tree house of Thumbalina)
  • Royal icing is one of all our favourites. It is very sweet in taste, is the most common pick for any kind of cake decoration, and offers a great advantage…it hardens and lasts for months!
  • If you are planning to style up your cake with that glossy look or with a  charming glaze, then you need to work on chocolate ganache icing
  • There may be days or weekends when you plan for a simple chocolate cake or cup cakes for the kids or a kind of weekend treat. Sounds good? It’s time for fudge cake icing
  • If you are not much into any complicated recipe and want it the rather simple easy way; 1 2 3 BINGO! Whipped cream is just so right for you!
  • It is a common gimmick to use an icing recipe that is easier to spread when it comes to covering the cake. After all it needs to look and taste perfectly smooth
  • Are you in problem? Icing is too thick? Use milk to make it thinner
  • Icing too thin? Use confectioners sugar to thicken it
  • The last one, use colour to give your idea a new edge…an orange pumpkin always looks better and real for that matter than a vanilla or chocolate coloured one!

When it comes to cake icing recipes for decorating, royal icing does top the list. Yes, there are many others that you could try. Just remember the clues mentioned above.

Happy Baking!
